American Capital hires for sponsor finance group

Sam Kwon previously worked at The Carlyle Group, within its Global Market Strategies (GMS) business, the alternative investment firm’s credit platform.  

American Capital has hired Sam Kwon as a managing director for its sponsor finance business, according to the firm's website. Kwon is based in New York.

He was previously a principal at The Carlyle Group, within its Global Market Strategies (GMS) platform, which handles a variety of credit strategies. Kwon was based in Los Angeles with Carlyle and left the firm in January, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Carlyle has since hired Kunal Soni from Medley Management as a managing director in March to lead West Coast origination for Carlyle's BDCs.

While at Carlyle, Kwon focused on private debt transactions, sourced through private equity sponsors and banks, for leveraged mid-market companies in a variety of sectors. Before joining in 2007, Kwon was a senior associate at Lightyear Capital for almost three years and an analyst with the UBS Investment Bank for two years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

American Capital is a publicly traded asset management firm that handles private equity and debt funds, a public BDC, CLOs, real estate and other strategies. The firm has $81 billion in assets under management, including leverage, and has expanded into Europe with its affiliate, European Capital. The firm is headquartered in Washington DC and has US offices in Annapolis, Maryland; New York, Chicago and Boston.
