DLA Piper adds partner in Hong Kong

A former Ashurst partner has joined the firm’s existing seven-partner Asia projects team.

Project finance veteran Matthias Schemuth has joined the international law firm DLA Piper as a partner in the firm’s Finance & Projects team in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Schemuth was a partner with law firm Ashurst since 2008. Before that, he was a Hong-Kong based partner in law firm White and Case for two years.

He has over two decades of experience advising lenders and sponsors on project and export credit finance transactions in the oil and gas, LNG, petrochemical, metal and mining sectors. His practice also focuses on international banking, commodity and trade structured finance and asset finance and leasing in emerging markets.

“It is our intention to continue to invest in and grow the Finance & Projects group in Asia. Matthias is an accomplished lawyer with a great reputation. His rich experience and deep understanding of the market will further strengthen our capabilities, and complement our already strong Finance & Projects group. We are very pleased to have him join DLA Piper,” said Terry O'Malley, chair of DLA Piper’s Asia Committee.

In his new role, Schemuth will join DLA Piper’s existing seven-partner Asia projects team that consists of Asia projects head Paul Lee in Hong Kong, China head of energy Carolyn Dong in Beijing, finance partner Timothy Tan in Bangkok, Singapore country manager Joe Bauerschmidt, finance partners Michael Horn and Myles Hankin in Singapore, and South Korea country managing partner Daniel Lee in Seoul.

In 2014, Schemuth led a team representing a consortium of Japanese and Korean export credit agencies and commercial lenders on a $2.8 billion liquefied natural gas project in Indonesia.

DLA Piper is a global law firm located in more than 30 countries throughout the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.
