Allianz Global Investors has appointed Greg Saichin from Pioneer Investments to lead a new team that will focus on investing in emerging market debt. He will begin work in the Autumn, according to a spokesman. The firm is looking to make further hires to bolster the team.
Saichin was previously head of emerging markets and high yield fixed income portfolio management at Pioneer Investments, and has more than 20 years’ experience of emerging market debt, the firm said in a statement.
Andreas Utermann, co-head and global chief investment officer at AllianzGI, said: “With the secular rebalancing of global growth from OECD markets towards emerging economies, emerging market debt is becoming an increasingly significant and attractive asset class for long term investors. The superior growth rates will be sustained through higher rates of investment, much of which will be debt-funded.”
The new emerging markets platform will be fund-based and will invest third-party capital, although it is likely Allianz will commit to the strategy, a source with knowledge of the process said.
The firm has built out an infrastructure debt platform, led by Deborah Zurkow, and also an Asian bond-focused product. Last month, it made two hires for the infra debt team, appointing Nicolas Lucas as a partner and Alexander Ball as an associate.
