Pillarstone expands Greek team with partner hire – exclusive

Vasilis Theofanopoulos joins Pillarstone’s Athens office from Iason Hellenic Shipping Company, where he was CFO for more than six years.

KKR-backed platform Pillarstone has expanded the team at its Athens office with the appointment of Vasilis Theofanopoulos as a partner.

Theofanopoulos joins the firm from Iason Hellenic Shipping Company, where he served as chief financial officer for more than six years. Prior roles include almost three years at JP Morgan as a senior associate and a senior manager at Deloitte.

He joined the firm in December.

A spokesman for Pillarstone confirmed the appointment to PDI.

Theofanopoulos is the latest figure to be lured from the shipping industry to Pillarstone. His appointment follows the arrival of Jens Martin Jensen, former chief executive of Frontline Management, as a partner last year.

It is the latest move by the firm to continue expanding its operations within the Greek market. In November, Elias Sakellis joined the firm as a partner after serving as a managing director at Quantum Pacific. Earlier in the year, Pillarstone completed a transaction involving two non-performing loan portfolios owned by both Alpha Bank and Eurobank at a combined valued of €1.2 billion.

Established in 2015, Pillarstone’s focus is assisting a number of leading European banks manage their underperforming assets. According to the firm, it deploys its expertise in restructuring the operations of the company and provides long-term capital.

In addition to operating in Greece, the platform has established partnerships with Italian banks UniCredit and Intesa Sanpaolo.
