UniCredit appoints Mustier as CEO

Jean Pierre Mustier will take over from Federico Ghizzoni as the chief executive of the Italian bank.

UniCredit Spa has appointed Jean Pierre Mustier, a partner at French asset management firm Tikehau Investment Managers, as its chief executive.

Mustier takes over from Federico Ghizzoni and will begin his role on 12 July. Mustier is familiar with the internal workings of the bank having served as head of corporate and investment banking at the Italian bank between 2011 and 2014 before joining Tikehau. Ghizzoni resigned from the role in May.

He has almost 30 years working in the banking sector, having started his career at French bank Société Générale and serving as head of the firm’s corporate and investment banking team prior to his first stint at UniCredit.

On selecting Mustier for the role, the bank noted his “exceptional credentials” and “deep knowledge of UniCredit’s structure”. Mustier received unanimous backing from the bank’s board of directors.

The appointment of Mustier now requires approval from the European Central Bank.
